Reminder: I am God's prized possession. (see James 1:18)

Finding your identity in the Father

Daughter of the Most High God

Loving mama, are you ready for a great revelation? You are the daughter of the Most High God! Check out what the Bible says:

  • Genesis 1:27 – So God created human beings in his own image. …
  • John 1:12-13 – But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God.
  • 2 Corinthians 6:18 – And I will be your Father, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.
  • Isaiah 64:7 – And yet, O Lord, you are our Father. We are the clay, and you are the potter. We all are formed by your hand.
  • 1 John 3:1 – See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are!…
  • Galatians 4:5-7 – God sent [Jesus] to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir.

Let that sink in for a moment. You are His chosen daughter. You were created by Him for Him. You are not a mistake. You are not an accident. You are not an orphan. You are the daughter of your Father in heaven.

If you are not yet convinced, read this section over and over until it sinks in. You are His daughter, and He created you on purpose.

Your dad’s misrepresentation

There are many ways on earth that we distort the Kingdom of God. For example, many people believe Christianity is about following rules. They think if you follow a certain set of rules close enough and are a “good person,” you’ll go to heaven. That’s not what the Bible says.

Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift — not from works, so that no one can boast.” The Bible says over and over we are saved by our faith in Jesus Christ, but this is often misunderstood in the world. (Check out the gospel message for more detail specifically on this.)

Fatherhood is no different. Our earthly fathers form an image in our minds of what a father is and what a father looks like. Maybe that’s harsh, critical, absent, judgmental, or loving circumstantially. Take a moment to reflect on how your dad modeled what a dad looks like.

Maybe your dad was fantastic. Present, loving, supportive, and gave biblical guidance. That’s great, but the Bible says every human is a sinner and falls short of the glory of God. Whether your earthly father misrepresented God once, or all day every day, this can cause you to misunderstand the character of your Father in heaven.

I’m convinced God wants to correct the image of a father in your mind. He wants to reveal to you who He is as your Father and show you His true character.

Your Father’s character

The Bible is a treasure trove overflowing with jewels of truth about your Father’s character. Here are a handful of the attributes the Bible describes:

  • Comforter: “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort.” 2 Corinthians 1:3
  • Generous: “Blessed is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavens in Christ.” Ephesians 1:3
  • Loving: “For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.” John 16:27
  • Merciful: “Be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.” Luke 6:36
  • Never changing: “Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.” James 1:17
  • Provider: “So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” Matthew 6:31-33
  • Rescuer: “who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father.” Galatians 1:4

Does this sound like how you picture God? Do you see any attributes that you were misunderstanding or unaware of? That’s okay. Allow God to transform the way you view Him. He wants you to see His true identity as your Father.

This is the truth about who your Father is. He is never changing. He exhibits every attribute all the time. Your actions don’t change the way He feels about you. You can trust this because the Bible says it. And get excited because this is just the start. Dive into your own Bible and ask God to reveal more of His attributes to you personally!

Attributes of your Father:
Comforter - 2 Corinthians 1:3
Generous - Ephesians 1:3
Loving - John 16:27
Merciful - Luke 6:36
Unchanging - James 1:17
Provider - Matthew 6:31-33
Rescuer - Galatians 1:4

Your identity as a child of God

As I was studying for this devotion, this knocked my socks off. James 1:18 says, “He chose to give birth to us by giving us his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his prized possession.” You are your Father’s prized possession.

A prized possession is an object or thing that you value more than anything else. Think of one of your prized possessions. Maybe it’s your child? A family heirloom? Maybe your Bible or wedding ring? Or, let’s be honest, your phone?

How do you care for it? You probably always keep close watch on it or keep it in a safe place. You make sure it’s protected and nothing bad happens to it. It’s always on your mind. You’re aware of its it needs and everything going on with it.

That’s how God feels about you. You are His “prized possession.” You are made in God’s image (Genesis 1:27). You are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). You were made by Him for Him (Colossians 1:16).

It doesn’t matter what your dad on earth has said about who you are. Your Dad in heaven says you are His prized possession. Choose to surrender the false identity of who you believed you were because of what your dad has spoken over you. Choose to take up your identity as a daughter of the King. Chosen. Wonderfully made. And loved.

Operating in your identity

Here are some practical steps to help you walk in your identity as a daughter of the King:

  • Start your day with prayer. Thank God for creating you and ask Him to guide you through your day.
  • Read the Bible every day. If you’re new to the Bible start in John. Reading the Bible every day will change your life.
  • Memorize and reflect on scripture. As you’re reading the Bible, spend time thinking about and memorizing verses that stand out to you. James 1:22 says, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” It’s important to apply scripture to our daily lives. Storing God’s word in your heart by memorizing and reflecting on it will help you apply it.
  • Rebuke any lies. If a lie comes into your mind, like you’re not good enough or anything previously spoken over you that doesn’t align with what God says about you, correct the thought. Remind yourself it isn’t true. Remember God created you and chooses you. Think of Bible verses that say who God says you are like James 1:18.
Reminder: I am God's prized possession. (see James 1:18)

A daughter’s heart cry

Father, you are good. Forgive me for how I’ve taken my understanding of a father and allowed it to misrepresent who you are and how you feel about me. Would you please help me to see who you truly are clearly. Please forgive my father for how he misled me. He doesn’t know better. Help me to see my true identity as your daughter. Help me to rest in who you say I am. Help me to walk in the freedom and love of being your daughter. I love you. In Jesus name I pray, amen.

Daughter of the King

With your Father there is freedom, love, joy, hope, grace, and so much more. Take off the lies of this world and feel the love of your Father. You are the daughter of the King.
